Study notes, an interpretation to weigh against the text, not Scripture itself.
- Paul begins with the reader's condition apart from God: "dead in trespasses and sins" (v. 1). The turn comes in v. 4: "But God, who is rich in mercy."
- Verses 8–9 place salvation in God's grace received through faith, "not of works, lest any man should boast." Many readers see this as the heart of the passage.
- Verse 10 then shows that good works follow salvation as its fruit: we are "created in Christ Jesus unto good works."

Closing prayer
Father, thank You that I am saved by grace through faith and not by my own works. Help me rest in Your mercy and walk in the good works You have prepared. In Jesus' name, amen.
